Putting the Spotlight on Super Junior!

Seriously, as long as there is even a single boy group in the poll, the girls have no chance. This time around Super Junior took it, with 43% of the votes.

Super Junior debuted as a male twelve-member group in fall of 2005 under SM Entertainment. Being from SM, they are label mates with other powerful groups such as TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, SHINee, f(x), EXO and Red Velvet, among other acts.

Super Junior dabbled in different sounds at the start of their career, but really found their niche with the release of ”Sorry, Sorry” in 2009. Since then Super Junior have stayed quite true to the sound that made them famous and have only recently started to clearly break away from the extremely catchy electronic pop songs that made them huge stars.

Less than a year after their debut member Kyuhyun was added, making thirteen members. Since then Super Junior has lost two members, their Chinese member Hankyung/Hangeng to a lawsuit in 2009 and member Kibum became inactive in 2009 to focus on his acting career, and officially left the group in 2015. As of now Super Junior has eleven members, though right now there’s always at least one of them in the military.

Super Junior has a lot of members, that is well known. I’d say they were the inspiration for EXO, who have inspired a whole new slew of massive groups. And since they do have so many members, there’s absolutely someone for everyone! Super Junior also has a total of five subunits, and several members have done other musical projects as well. Super Junior has a massive range, and plenty of diversity.

There are many benefits to stanning a group that has been around since the dawn of time. They’re extremely established, well-known and the boys themselves are such pros. The fandom is old and less intense than the fans of some rookie groups. There is a sense of stability to a group such as Super Junior.

Being under a label like SM is a double-edged sword, but I think that Super Junior are on the good side. They’re successful, so SM can’t hide them in a dungeon like they have with some other acts, but they’ve never been successful in the way that for example EXO or TVXQ have been, so they also haven’t been over-worked quite in the way those groups have. I think that’s the sweet-spot to be in.

Super Junior has a massive range, and this can also be a negative. The group was designed to be able to take over the entire entertainment scene, from singing and dancing to acting and hosting. And they definitely have that ability. Whatever entertainment-related ability is needed, I’m sure Super Junior has a member for it. But this means some of the members aren’t quite as musically talented as for example the power trio of K.R.Y (Kyuhyun-Ryeowook-Yesung). This doesn’t bother me personally, but I have definitely heard the term ”worthless” floating around.

  1. Sungmin: “his first kiss was with Eunhyuk” sorry, i just died from laughing HAHAHA

Kangin: “In 2009 he was arrested for a DUI and a hit-and-run. He was put on hiatus and had to pay a fine.” WHY IS THIS NEWS TO ME, I’M SUPPOSED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM

Eunhyuk: “He wants to go back to the US because of the hotdogs.” that’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.

I agree with all the strengths and weaknesses, which is what makes them so awesome and special. With 5 members in the military and two more going soon, SJ will temporarily busy with individual activities, but they will release a new album next year along with a new world tour as Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon complete their service. Can’t wait to see all of them on stage again, as I continue to fly around to see them. XD

  2. Ahh my bias group ❤ I also believe they were the inspiration for EXO.

I agree with your comments that there are members less musically talented than others, but I would also argue that at least in recent years, those members in particular have developed immensely. Eunhyuk is the first to come to mind. He went from only having one-liners to doing the adlibs and high notes in a lot of D&E's songs.

I always wonder how you choose which facts to include on each member in these posts. Do you get them from somewhere or are they just little things you picked up on over time about each of the groups that you write a post for? They are always so cute and interesting!

  3. That is true, those members have developed, but I still feel like it is in some ways quite an unbalanced group, musically… Of course that’s a matter of taste though. As I said in the post, it’s not actually something that bothers me.

And it varies where I get the facts from, some are things I know since before and that I’ve just picked up on somewhere, and some are things I ”researched” before I wrote the post! I’m glad you enjoy them!
