5 months after the special single ‘Miracles in December’ was released, and 9 months since the last proper single, ‘Growl’, was released, EXO is back with the extended play and promotional single who both share the same name, ‘Overdose’!
Before we get into this review for real I have to explain the title of this post. The reason why I call this “EXO-K” instead of just EXO-K is that the EXO-M members are in this song! I’m not sure if SM have gotten confused about what constitutes EXO-K/EXO-M, but this isn’t it. That the EXO-K members sing most of the song and that it is in Korean does not make it an EXO-K song, that just makes it a poorly balanced Korean EXO song.
I’m not outrageously in love with this song, but it has gotten stuck quite deep in my brain, so I’ve been walking around humming it constantly since I first heard it. I also think that this might be quite the grower, so I’m sure I’ll like it more in about two weeks.
I guess SM’s really going for the electronic/dubstep sound. ‘Everybody’, ‘Mr.Mr.’ and now ‘Overdose’ are all very dubstep-y tracks, and I’m not sure if I’m liking it or not. I immediately liked ‘Everybody’, ‘Mr.Mr’ really grew on me, and there’s nothing wrong with ‘Overdose’, but I’m not sure if dubstep is really what I want SM’s style to be. No, actually, I’m sure that’s not what I want it to be. So I’ll hope that this is just a phase, and that SM will move on soon enough.
I really like D.O’s voice in this song, more than I usually do. Baekhyun did really well as well, and I’m overall happy with everyone’s performance. But, and I know that it’s very biased of me, I wish that Kai had more lines.
I’m very pleased with the fact that even though EXO-M weren’t there a whole lot, Lay and Xiumin both got proper lines, which they handled excellently. Especially Lay, his singing is really growing on me.
Chen and Luhan… You guys are my babes, and you killed it. Great job, guys.
Chanyeol is for sure my favorite rapper in EXO, and I liked him even more here than I normally do. He roughed up his voice in a way that I love, so keep it up!
These lyrics are very straight-forward. They describe a level of attraction, desire and infatuation that has turned into an addiction. The emotions that are described in these lyrics don’t sound very healthy to me, but I’m as far from a romantic that you can get, so what do I know?
One of the first lines, and the perfect summary of what I thought when I found out the lyrics.
This is clearly a dangerous addiction.
Yes, love is clearly a dangerous addiction.
This, the hook in the chorus, pretty much sums up the whole thing.
This is clearly a dangerous addiction. Sorry. I’ll stop.
This is clearly… Oh, right. Sorry.
Seriously, is this what it’s supposed to be like when you’re in love? I’m not sure whether these lyrics just describe an intense love, or something deeply unhealthy. And it’s in no way sad that I can’t distinguish that.
This is not healthy. I’m sticking with that.
Nope, not healthy. EXO, you have to learn to be a “me”, before you can be a “we”!
I can’t have been the only one who thought of saesangs when I read this, right? Are EXO sending a subtle hint?
This is very much an SM box video, so there isn’t really much to say about it. The labyrinth is definitely my favorite set, just because it’s the most different. I really don’t like the set they’re on when they’re wearing the colorful clothes, that just gives me a headache. The set they’re on in the “suits” is fine, but it isn’t exactly interesting.
This might have been the best part of the entire video. It was random, and adorable, and I liked it.
Damn, getting some sort of decent shot of that light thingy was not easy! Most of the screen shots for this review aren’t of the best quality, but that’s because they’re just moving to fast!
This part bothers me. What Chen throws in the video for the Korean version and what Baekhyun throws in the Chinese version look identical to me. They do not have the same power! Plus, it looks like some kind of mixture between light and lightning, so it’s like they’ve somehow fused their power. And also, why can Lay/Suho redirect it? They shouldn’t be able to do that. Maybe I’m taking the whole super powers thing too seriously, but I really liked all of that! I also need some sort of update on tree of life. SM, please tell us what’s going on with tree of life!
I couldn’t get a decent shot of it, but that little thing where Chen turned the camera and then Luhan came and righted it was cute. But all in all this wasn’t the most unique or interesting video.
I liked the dance! If I’ve got my facts straight this was choreographed by the same guy who did the choreography for SHINee’s ‘Sherlock’, which is one of my absolute favorite dances from them. There’s a quirkiness to both of these choreographies that I really like.
I’m not sure if this counts as being a part of the dance or not, but this is awesome. Mad cool. I also like the little solo dance that Sehun does on the other side of the crotch-portal, but who in the name of all that is holy thought it was a good idea to give that dance to Kris in the Chinese version? That was awkward, oh so awkward. Kris has always been an awkward dancer, but I felt like he improved last year. But now he feels more awkward than ever! So, Kris, what’s up with that?
I know that you know which part I mean. And it was glorious. But why did you zoom in on their faces when EXO-K did it in the Chinese version?! Not cool.
I liked the drumming thing too, it was cute and a little quirky.
I really like it when they align in kpop dances, and they did it in ‘Sherlock’ and they did it here, so I guess the choreographer likes it too.
Tao, please don’t get hurt. This is so awesome, but I know how hard it is, and I really don’t want him to hurt himself just for the sake of a cool dance move.
Outfits and Styling
I really liked this group styling, and whoever decided to give Xiumin a sleeveless shirt is a genius. I really liked the outfits they wore in the labyrinth as well, they were very nice.
But these outfits were awful, and we all know it. They looked very bad on some, and they didn’t suit anyone.
And now let’s move on to the individual looks! I didn’t manage to get good enough solo shots of Tao, Kris and Sehun though, so I’ll comment on them first. I love love love what they’ve done with Kris’ and Sehun’s hair. They look great, and I’m very pleased.
I’m not sure how I feel about Tao’s look though. At times I think it looks very cool and funky, but sometimes it just looks funny. It might grow on me though.
It feels like I’m the only one who isn’t crazy about blonde Suho. Sure, he looks good blonde, but I prefer him in his look from their debut.
I absolutely love him styled like this though. I’ve always been strangely very attracted to Eminem, so I love $uho.
I hate these hats. I hate them so much. I don’t ever want to see any of them wearing it ever again. These are the ugliest hats that have ever been fashionable. Please make them disappear.
The clothes are awful, but Sehun looks great in that hat. That’s all I had to say.
I’m loving Xiumin in this hair. And whoever styles them better put him in sleeveless for all their live performances.
Not the best shot, but Baekhyun looks good in this hair. It’s not the best I’ve seen him look, but it works.
Not the best shot either, but Chanyeol looks excellent in this hair. I still want him to get long hair again though.
Chen looks gorgeous as always. This hair suits him perfectly, and it really shows off that super-gorgeous face that he has.
Definitely not the best shot, but you know what it looks like! I like this hair on Lay, but I really want him to get back to the hair that he had when he filled in for Jonghyun as a dancer, because that was just beautiful.
I’m really liking D.O this way. He’s looking good, that’s all that needs to be said.
I’m loving all three looks we got from Luhan in this video, he looked absolutely flawless. This was great, the ponytail was great.
And this was great. And yes, this was the best shot I could get of it. This whole styling, from hair to clothes was gorgeous.
To be honest, I definitely prefer Kai in darker hair. That’s not to say that blonde doesn’t work for him, I just prefer him darker. I also think that he’s been wearing a bit too much makeup lately, I think he looks better more natural.
I’m liking the song, but I’m not obsessed with it. The video is quite boring, and very typically SM. The dance is cool, and I’m looking forward to their music show appearances. With the exception of those awful outfits, I’m very pleased with the styling of the boys. I’m really liking almost everyone’s hair this time around, and there’s no one who I think looks too weird.
This was a highly anticipated comeback, so I’m sure you all have a lot of opinions about it. Let me know what you think in the comments!
