TVXQ is back! A little over a year after their last single ‘Humanoids’ was released TVXQ is back with their new studio album ‘Tense’ and a brand new promotional single ‘Something’! But before I tell you my opinions on this song and video, make sure to first watch the music video!
There! Now lets get this review started!
This is, by far, the best single TVXQ has released since JYJ left. The fact that JYJ contained their best singers and that Changmin and Yunho’s voices are polar opposites has really worried me. I honestly didn’t think that they could do it without JYJ. I now stand corrected.
I thought ‘Keep Your Head Down’ was really cool, despite the troubling message, but it was honestly just the chorus that made me listen to that song. ‘Humanoids’ was okay, but kind of boring. And both ‘Catch Me’ and ‘Before U Go’ were hot piles of mess. Disagree with me on this if you want, but this is the way I feel. That’s why I was completely stunned when I heard this song. It’s got that smooth and almost jazzy style, that seems to be becoming more popular in kpop right now, that I happen to love. It’s a cool and different-sounding song where the guys’ voices blend together and contrast each other in a very nice way. Plus, no embarrassing rap! Thank you for constraining yourself, Yunho.
I’m slightly confused about these lyrics… On one side we’ve got them bragging about how cool they are and how all girls want them and saying stuff like this: If you can’t read it from my fabulous screenshot (you’re going to be seeing lots of these) the line he sings is: “You’re not good enough for me, so stop baby”.
Here’s another one that seems to describe a cockiness and the idea that no girl’s good enough for them. “You’re going to have to do better than that”
But then we’ve got this. “If you hesitate, I’ll cry baby”. Suddenly they’re not too good for her anymore, they actually want her! This plus the repeated “She got that something” makes it seem like there’s a completely different story going on here than the cocky lines expressed. My only logical solution to this is that when they’re acting cocky they’re talking to all the other girls, NOT to the one who has got “that something”. Let me know in the comments what your opinion on this is!
This is just for the Engrish. “She got that something” isn’t terrible but it would be a hell of a lot better if they said “SHE’S got that something”. “She’s just a beautiful” is worse and they obviously should have said “She’s just SO beautiful”, or something like that. But it wouldn’t be SM without the Engrish, right?
What?! Yunho, this is outrageous! Why in the name of all the kpop gods would they think that you look like an idol?!
Most of this video is fine. Some cool shots but most of it’s quite SM box-ie just with a twist.
But one thing in the video is a little disturbing. The use of the white women. Both of the guys have solo shots where they’re sitting with several white women each. It’s not exactly terrible but it’s a wee disturbing when you look at the way white women are being represented in kpop videos across the board. They are a symbol of a class and richness, they never talk nor dance, all they do is sit with the guys. Maybe with some touching and kissing thrown in there. Okay, sometimes they dance, but that’s just a club kind of dancing, any girls who do any sort of real dancing are, of course, Korean.
This video takes the stoic white women even further than most videos, in this one they’re art. Literally.
Awesome dance! But I wouldn’t have expected anything else… My favorite parts would be: 1. The awesome playing-bass-on-strings dance in the beginning. 2. Yunho’s solo dance with himself as the background dancers, that was AWESOME! and 3. When Yunho was being pulled by the strings. At first it looked like he was being controlled by the strings but then it kind of looked like he was controlling the strings… Anyway, that was super cool.
Styling and outfits
This was the best styling I’ve seen in a video in quite a while. I loved that everything they wore were kind of suits, but not really. Or just really non-traditional suits. Prepare yourself for pictures!
These are probably among the suit-iest of all the suits in the video. And while I don’t know anything about suits, these give me a very retro vibe. Cool colors, especially Changmin’s.
Yunho’s pimp shot is even more suit-y and a bit more serious and dressed up than Changmin’s. Plus, one more bow tie! This is also a great representation of the one thing I really didn’t like about the styling in this video, who the hell thought that those fake tattoos were a good idea?! Because they weren’t.
I love how these outfits are sort of suits, but not really… I also love how the duo are constantly matching without ever wearing the same clothes.
Favorite outfit and styling in the entire video right here. Love the pants, love the hair, NEED the jacket.
Here’s another favorite. It’s not easy to pull off a suit like that but Changmin did it, and he did it beautifully.
As I said before: I love how they constantly look like they belong together (even when they’re not in the same shot, like here) without looking exactly the same. I also don’t think that Yunho could have pulled off the completely checkered suit so changing that top for this very classy and more mature style was a brilliant move.
Okay, more love for this outfit. That jacket! I need it! And the leopard print shirt is very snazzy indeed. Yunho might have aced the dancing in this video but Changmin was the king of looking absolutely fabulous! (Just lose the hand tattoo)
Oh, the sparkles! I love that they decided to have the wildest outfits in this part of the video, they really work well with the dancing.
More sparkles! It was great that they made one sparkly on top and the other sparkly on the bottom. Very cool, indeed.
Another occasion where I love how they did the matching. Having Changmin wear a leopard print jacket and Yunho wear shoes and tie in the same print? Glorious. It would have been too overpowering if they both had worn a lot of leopard, so this was perfect.
And the outfits they wore in the end and beginning were awesome too? How is this even possible? Normally we always get at least one outfit that we just want to forget, but not here! TVXQ looked awesome in all their outfits and the stylist/-s who styled them for this video deserves mad cred!
So, that was my review of TVXQ’s ‘Something’! The Kings of SM truly earned that title this time around… I know that this ended up being mostly about the outfits, but come on! They deserved the attention! Anyway, I really liked the song and if we eliminate the weird use of the white women in the video this was really good all around!
